The Oxford and Cambridge Boat race is being held today. One of London's greatest annual events, it always attracts the crowds who come to watch the students as they try to out row one another in their paddle boats along the banks of the River Thames. Thankfully the sun is shining so it looks like being a nice fine day. That always helps! The boat race described by some as "the world's longest surviving sporting challenge", takes place between the students of London's famous Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
The historical annual event dates back to the 1800's when Charles Merivale, a student at Oxford challenged his friend (also called Charles, who just happened to be the famous poet William Wordsworth's nephew!) to a boat race. Charles Wordsworth was a student at the rival Cambridge University. The famous race, one of London's most celebrated events still continues to this day and is watched by many millions of people worldwide.
