After a public outcry over the cost of the pay as you go hospital telephone services, the ban on mobile phone use in British hospitals is set to be lifted within weeks. Mobile phone use is currently banned in hospitals. Under the current system, anyone wanting to make a phone call is obliged to use one of the hospital bedside pay as you go telephone services run by private companies and costing up to 50p a minute! Many patients and relatives have complained about running up massive phone bills for the privilege of using them. In the past it was argued that mobile phones interfered with hospital equipment. However experts have found that in most wards they don’t cause any problems. In the future mobile phone use by staff, patients and their visitors will be allowed in communal areas of hospitals.
