BRITONS LONG TO RETURN TO 1950'S

Nostalgic Britons would love to turn the clock back and return to life in the 1950’s, according to the results of a recent survey. Many have fond memories of the post war decade which signalled the end of rationing and the popularity of “I Love Lucy” and Elvis Presley. Most British people would like to see the return of local grocer’s shops, red telephone boxes, milkmen (whatever happened to them!) and post offices. In addition they would like to see more bobbies (policemen) on the beat and even the return of the rag and bone man (now that is nostalgic – I can remember my grandparents talking about him!) Street fundraisers, speed cameras and parking meters came top of the list of Britons’ pet hates of modern life. A spokesman for the supermarket chain that commissioned the survey said it proved that even though today’s society appears to have it all, clearly the good, old fashioned values of half a century ago are much more appealing.

I think most American's are nostalgic for the 50's as well. Not me, what would I do without my Internet? I wonder if in the 50's people were nostalgic for the 20's?

I don't know how I ever managed without e-mail or the net either Marsha. It's funny how people sometimes crave to go back to a different era. I thought the 60's were good. I was only born in 66 so was just a baby then!

I'm nostalgic for the 50's and early 60's. Its one of the reasons I live where I do, we have so much mid-century modern architecture, and are pleasantly haunted by the golden age of hollywood and the rat pack era as well.

As a side note, I live just a block away from one of Lucy & Desi's former homes here in Palm Springs. (they had 4 different houses over the many years they lived here).

You love in a wonderful place for nostalgia Rick. You are so lucky to live where you do. I used to watch re-runs of I Love Lucy. It was a great show.

Okay...what is a rag and bone man? I have linked to this post in my England Goes GONZO carnival post...hope you don't mind! :)

I tried to comment on this post a couple of days back when I got my paper doll post ready for your carnival. For some reason it didn't get through to you.

What is a rag and bone man? I too long for better days or a way to make our days that we live in...better! I have noticed a trend in American fashion where the styles are going back to the 50's.

Hi Janey

Blogger seems to be slow advising of comments now. I don't always get the e-mails to tell me somebody has left a comment. I'm going to do a special post on the rag and bone man in a few days' time so watch this space! I always liked the 50's and 60's - they seem like great times to live in.
